When Serena opened her eyes next, it was already morning. The first thing she saw were Joshua's bright hazel eyes gazing lovingly at her. For a moment, she thought there was sadness behind them, but then he gave her one of those smiles that he reserved only for her, her favourite. She smiled back.

‘Good morning. How long have you been watching me sleep?’

‘All night,’ replied Joshua, still smiling, and drawing closer to her. Underneath the sheets, the heat of their two naked bodies coming together was enough to cause a volcano to erupt. ‘I didn’t want to miss a thing; you’re so beautiful.’

Serena blushed. Had he really stayed awake all night watching her sleep? She didn’t care; all she wanted to do was kiss him again and stay with him like this, forever. She reached up with her lips and went for the first part of that wish. Her lips then skipped over the little scar just above the upper lip and she stopped. She realized she still hadn’t asked him about it.

‘What’s wrong?’ asked Joshua, sensing her hesitation.

‘Will you tell me how you got this?’ Serena took the courage to ask, her fingers caressing the long-closed wound.

Joshua drew his head back just a bit and laughed, looking at her.

‘After all this time, now you ask?’

‘I figured you might not wanna talk about it,’ she replied, lowering her eyes as if shy.

Joshua lay there silent for a moment. She was right, this wasn’t something he liked to talk or even think about, but he could not keep this or anything else about him from her. Not anymore.

‘It was Alex,’ he finally said. ‘This was the result of her first major outburst. After Drakeon infected her, she started to get worse every day. It was little things at first, yelling, swearing, punching the walls when she’d get really angry for no real reason. Rebelling every day, a little more. Eventually things got really bad. She was just fifteen and she was fighting with our mom over staying out late. She was being really disrespectful, so I tried to intervene, when she suddenly grabbed a kitchen knife. She swung and she cut me. It wasn’t anything serious, but I was bleeding a lot. My mom took the knife from her hand and slapped her hard, the first and only time she ever did so. And that’s when Alex turned on her. In her rage, she pushed her down the stairs and then ran away from home.’

Here Joshua stopped, trying to maintain control of his stirring emotions, while Serena caressed his face non-stop, now regretting the question.

‘My mom’s been paralysed from the waist down ever since. I took care of her for a while, but eventually she convinced me to go look for Alex and bring her back home. She’s been in a care home since then, waiting for me to return to her with Alex. I just never felt that I would be able to keep that promise.’

‘You will,’ Serena said, gently pulling his head down so that their lips met.
